Sonam Kapoor at Cannes 2015 Red Carpet in 5 Outfits, Makeup Breakdown, Hair

By Contributor: Ananya

Sonam Kapoor’s sartorial sense has been a hot bed of scrutiny ever since people discovered she has a n amazing sense of style. Apart from a few occasional slip-ups, she usually manages to pull it off rather picturesquely. Balanced by her elegance and poise, she does not shy away from picking up adventures ensembles on her way to important events. So, it was obvious that we would keep an eye out for what she chose to wear at Cannes 2015. This was her fifth consecutive year at the Cannes ceremony representing L’Oreal as one of its Brand Ambassadors. This year she was joined by Katrina (her debut at Cannes) and Aishwarya (practically a Cannes stalwart with a 11 year run)

Here’s what Sonam wore to the Cannes event and our take on her ensembles:

Sonam Kapoor in The powder pink Bodycon at Cannes 2015

Sonam started off her Cannes sojourn on May 16 with in a pink bodycon designed by Ulyanna Sergeenko

and pairing it up with Jimmy Choo pumps for a L’Oreal make-up tutorial shoot.

Though the dress is pretty and all, don’t you think it’s a tad bit too dull, especially with her complexion and the make-up she donned. That hair-style is a complete mismatch! Over all a pretty picture if you don’t mid a make-up lesson or two by someone dressed up as a Spanish milkmaid.

Sonam in The Ralph and Russo Ball-gown at the Red Carpet at Cannes

Later the day, Sonam did really steal the show  in the electric blue Ralph and Russo couture gown she chose for her red carpet appearance. It’s beautiful; the dress, the hair-colour and the volume in her perfectly styled mane! It takes a great deal of confidence to sport a show-stopping look and she managed that. Her skin was smooth and bronzed out and accentuated by her metallic eyes and crimson lips. The make-up wasn’t over-powering and drew all the attention to her hair and that gorgeous dress.

The dramatic volume of the fabric and the amount of peplum at her hips accentuated her figure. She had paired with up with a matching pair of Giuseppe Zanotti sandals. The diamond and sapphire earrings that complete the look are Chopard’s.

Sonam Kapoor in Abu and Sandeep saree at Cannes 2015

Let’s take a moment here. How gorgeous is the revealing and sexy Abu and Sandeep ruffled saree. She is carrying it with such oomph and poise. The drop earrings compliment the cleavage perfectly along with the hair tied in a bun. The back of the blouse is equally gorgeous. Last year it was an Anamika Khanna off white saree which turned heads, this year at Cannes its this ruffled saree.

Sonam Kapoor in The bird dress? No wait, the noodle strudel?

Ah! The dress that took Twitter by storm. And no, in this case, it wasn’t a good thing. Rihanna in the elaborate and extravagant Guo Pei couture or  Lady Gaga in Balenciaga at the Met gala this year were more of a statement. Looking towards Europe, Lupita’s orchid lips made a statement and so did model Tanya Dziahileva’s twisting and curling ponytail. But the lime green Elie Saab gown does not make a statement.

I am wondering how she managed not to trip in that, I mean how can she see what’s in front of her when Rooney Mara in her relatively simple ensemble tripped. And I am sure Sonam’s wearing stratospheric heels. By the way, did you know that guests were barred from entering the event  for not wearing heels? Hm, so much for the Cannes theme “year of la femme”  (year of the female) this time around.

By the way, did anyone notice Sonam’s  earrings? They are Chopard’s. But that does not change the fact that they resemble plastic grapes dangling from her ears. Does anyone remember Sonam’s 2011 Jean Paul Gaultier? Now, that was a statement.

Sonam Kapoor in The Gold Dress at Cannes 2015 Chopard’s Grand Soiree

Sonam attended the gold themed Chopard Party at Cannes wearing the “Butterfly” couture designed by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla

. It comprised of an gold brocade bodice with large winged shoulders, therefore, the “butterfly”. The black skirt had a slit that took the outfit from so-so to just perfect. Luckily it wasn’t a huge slit; those just look ostentatious and somewhat obnoxious.

Her hair was parted on a side and set in a sleek bun and make-up bordered on nude and bronzed .It does take off all the attention from her face and hair so the dress stands centre-piece. I guess she could have done better with that make-up. I am not particularly in love with the dress or something, but I like her confidence and posture and the way she’s managing to pull the look off.

  1. Sonam definitely knows how to carry off a dress. Even though the Elie Saab dress was a disaster, just look at her strutting around in it!!!
    Great compilation though Ansh :)

  2. She looks bright in the Ellie saab gown. I like the earring she is wearing for that gown. The earring color goes well with her gown color. My favorite is the Ralph and Russo ball gown.

  3. I usually like how she dresses, but I detested everything she wore! The first dress makes me wonder which era she is in?

The Blue one, nah, It feels like extra yards have been folded on her.
Neither did I like the saree. It was pretty. Not that I am being ‘conservative’ here, but the blouse is too low to leave anything to imagination and somehow not in keeping with the overall verve. :(

I am not getting into if Ostriches are wondering about the new member in their flock!
